Dana recognized the number. âHey, Auntie. Howâd it go?â
âI donât know. Not very well, I guess.â
âI told you heâs not great with women and youâll probably have to give him lots of hints and opportunities and a couple of chances. Do you think he picked up on anything?â
âNot really. But I donât think he likes me.â
âOh, thatâs just the way he is. Kind of grumpy-grouchy, but I think heâs just lonely and doesnât know what to do about it.â
âWell, he is cute.â
âDo you think he looks like Elvis Presley?â
âYeah, he does. I mean, in some of the younger pictures anyway, before Elvis put on so much weight.â
âI think Grace Havisto actually calls him Elvis. So whatâs your next move? Are you going to do any decorating for him?â
âHe thinks he can do it himself and he doesnât want to spend the money.â
âFigures. Well maybe in a few weeks you can come back and actually give him concrete ideas. In the meantime Iâll sneak in some comment about budgeting for decorating. Bring up the importance of creating great first impressions in a new business.â
âI was wondering if I should try to get a job working in one of his shops. Maybe running the bakery? I did manage that little café in Green Bay for nearly ten years.â
âHmmm. Iâm surprised he said anything about the businesses. Heâs really trying to keep it hush-hush. But, yeah, why not try it? Canât hurt. And heâll definitely need help.â
âMight as well. It doesnât look like Iâm gonna land any interior decorating projects around here.â
âYou should have told him about your experience in the cafe.â
âI didnât think of it at the time. Which was probably for the best because I got the impression heâd had enough of me. There were a few awkward moments.â
âTell me about it. Iâve sure had my share of what youâd call really weird and awkward moments with Mr. Brent Wallace. But he is totally single so at least you donât have any competition. Iâd say leave him alone awhile, then stop in and say you were curious about his progress. Or, better yet, you could say that when he talked about all those shops, you thought about it and realized youâd be a good one to run the bakery.â
âOkay. That would give me another excuse for dropping by since heâd made it pretty clear heâs not that impressed with my interior decorating portfolio. Thanks, Dana. Whoâd ever guess youâd be giving relationship advice to your Auntie Kathy?â
âHey, no problem. As long as I donât have to offer any guarantees of success. Iâll talk to you later. Hey, wait! You know what might work . . .â
